Traveling around the city of Newport Beach you will get a taste of the different residential and commercial areas that make up the city, one of the most desirable living locations on the entire west coast. Newport Beach is known for its “villages”, each of which has its own different atmosphere. These villages include:
Balboa Peninsula stretches out for three miles and is lined by the Pacific Ocean on one side with the Newport Harbor on the other. It is renowned world wide as the home of “The Wedge”, a fabulous spot for bodysurfing, as well as the Ocean Front Walk, which is one of the most spectacular walks in the entire region. At the bottom of the Newport Pier you will find the charming McFadden Square, named after the family who helped found the city and the Dory Fishing Fleet, which is where fisherman from the area bring fresh fish each day. If you head down south about a mile you will be in Balboa, another village of the city, boasting the Balboa Fun Zone, Balboa Pier and the historic Balboa Pavilion. Catching a local ferry will conveniently take you across to Balboa Island, a must see destination for tourists.
A charming area filled with shops and spectacular waterfront dining, Lido Marina Villa is a great place to spend some time, visit the historic Lido Theater and experience the panoramic views of the water. Across the bridge lies Lido Isle, a residential community situated on one of the seven islands that make up Newport Harbor. Nearby you will find the Cannery, a former fish canning plant, which still stands today.
Mariner’s Mile is a section of Coast Highway and is situated between the Arches Interchange and Dover Drive. There are marine supply shops, yacht brokerages, luxury automobile dealerships and a mix of shopping centers and eateries as well as the picturesque Balboa Bay Club and Resort.
Balboa Island is in fact made up of three different small islands; Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and Collins Island. Marine Avenue, the main road, is lined by unique little boutiques, art galleries and eateries. The island is well known for its fabulous walking path that encircles the perimeter, the Balboa Island Parade which is held annually, the regular Art Walk and the world famous Balboa Bar, a scoop of plain vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate and served with various toppings.
Known as the Crown of the Sea, Corona Del Mar is the home of the fabulous Corona Del Mar State Beach as well as the Robert E. Badham Marine Conservation Area. Inspiration and Lookout Points are aptly named, offering outstanding views that take a person’s breath away. In the nearby downtown area of the village one can find boutiques, stores, eateries and the 2 and a half acre Sharman Library and Gardens, a world class horticultural retreat.
Newport Center is home to both mid and high rise business and residential buildings, hotels and the fabulous Fashion Island, a high point in the area in terms of luxury dining and exclusive shopping for the whole of California.
Newport Coast became part of the City of Newport Beach in 2002 and offers new homes, high class hotels and the world renowned Pelican Hill Golf Course. The historic Crystal Cove State Park sits in between the Coast Highway and the sea, and includes three beautiful miles of coastline. This historic area has charmingly restored homes originally constructed in the 1930s available to rent as vacation cottages all year round.
The Islands of Newport Harbor are either different islands all located within Newport Harbor. They include Collins Island, Bay Island, Harbor Island, Linda Isle, Lido Isle, Little Balboa Island and Newport Island which are all strictly residential living areas. Balboa Island however has some small commercial areas mixed in with the residential neighborhoods located there.
